Roi004

Roi 004

The symbol I have chosen to use in my animation is the barcode. This is a symbol of mass production and conformity. The movement of a conveyor belt will be used frequently in my animation along with other textures like metal and plastic that brings to mind mass production.

With my animation I will try to target the social issue of conformity. This will be done through the use of a character I have developed named Roi004. Roi004 is a piece of machinery that resembles a Polaroid camera whose job is to replicate a specific barcode hundreds of times onto stickers, ready to be attached to a product. Roi004 is among hundreds of other Roi004s within a warehouse replicating the same barcode and grows tired and bored of it. The animation is set on a day where Roi004 see’s a bird fly past the window of the warehouse. Inspired by this beautiful sight he tries to express some creativity by drawing the bird instead of the barcode but is disciplined by his supervisor. By making small changes to every barcode he makes he manages to avoid getting caught by his supervisor but also manages to express creativity in his work. This is revealed to the audience after all of the Roi004s turn themselves off except the main one. Who cycles to the back of the ware house and see’s the enormous piece of art made up of all the barcodes he printed to resemble the shape of the free bird he saw in the window.

Final Elevations

Roi 004  is the main character of my animation. He is a robot that becomes tired of doing the same thing over and over again within his workplace. his job is to replicate barcoded stickers for mass production but through his innovation he manages to create a piece of art work out of the collective sum of his sheet of barcodes and free himself of the bordem of his job.

Environment inspiration

I am looking to create a very dull environment that has very little human energy, almost as if fully run by Machines.

Concept Development

My idea is to have a small character that works in mass production next to other robots of the same model, who through a series of events and realisations becomes an outcast of the pack and frees himself from the boredom and conformity of mass production.

MODEL ARTIST INFLUENCES

  Francis Bacon

In these paintings of Bacons I see a lot of themes focussed around identity and the blurring of individuality. I really like the way that something as recognizable as the human head has been painted in such an abstract manner but still remains a human head in the viewers eyes. I feel that Bacon has played with materials well in these paintings as  the faces seem to have been manipulated as if they were made of clay or another more malleable material.  Bacon ends up transforming the human head into some more organic through his abstract style.

Salvador Dali

It seems to me that Dali deals with themes of liberation in the two pieces of his work to the left . The top image depicts an arm that is uplifting what seems to be a head upon an organic bone. The lower piece of work describes a man escaping the refines of the physical world. In my project i could target themes of liberation through the use of contrasting materials. Something liberated could be described with an organic texture and the confining obstacle could be described as a hard immovable material.
